Halloween can never come too early, and the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce is helping get the Shore communities get into the “spirit”(it’s a little funny) with its 29th Annual Halloween Parade!  This isn’t just any parade either.  There will be spooky, and not-so-spooky floats and marchers donning their trick-or-treat costumes for spectators to enjoy.  Participants will be judged for a chance to win prizes courtesy of the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce.

Jenkinson’s A-Scare-ium!

aquarium     Costumes, candy, pumpkins, and haunted houses.  All the right ingredients for Halloween fun!  What about penguins, sharks, and alligators?  Throw in pirates and hidden treasure, and you have the A-Scare-ium at Jenkinson’s Aquarium in Point Pleasant Beach.  Back by popular demand, this is the 5th year for the annual event of  Halloween family fun and adventure.

Our family visited the A-Scare-ium for the first time last Halloween and had a great time.  There is nothing better than pirates and treasure to catch the boys’ imaginations.  Swash Bucklers interacted great with the little guys, and wow, they had fun surprising big brother!  They definitely knew how to interact with every age to keep it fun for everyone.  The boys each made a bandanna with a beaded strand, that hung in their hair like a pirate!  They really got in the spirit once a Wench applied their tattoos!

aquarium  This year the A-Scar-ium theme is “The Plight of the Pillagin’ Penguins”.  There will be a treasure hunt and activities for the kids.  This weekend will be the last two nights for this event.

Friday, October 23rd 6-9 PM

Saturday, October 24th 6-9 PM

Admission:  $6 per Person*

The A-Scare-ium is creative Halloween fun, done well, by the Aquarium staff and an easy evening out with the kids.  For more information, visit Jenkinson’s Aquarium online.

*Admission price is not included with regular daily admission to the aquarium, and is only good  during the hours of the special event.

Pumpkin Picking-And More-At the Jersey Shore

Casola Farms October 9th, 2009Casola Pumkin Patch

Now that Halloween is just around the corner, and stores are – unbelievably – putting out Holiday decorations – we decided to take our 18 month old daughter pumpkin picking. Boy, was I in for a surprise! I had never experienced anything like this before – talk about an impressive production. Not only were there many places to choose from, there is an incredible array of things to do, above and beyond just picking out a pumpkin for your little ones. After much research, I chose to visit Casola Farms Fall Fest in Holmdel.

         Casola Pony Rides

I had heard this time of year can get VERY busy with class trips, and there can be long lines for the hayrides, petting zoo, etc… so we chose to arrive first thing in the morning. They open at 9:00am, which is a very family friendly time. We pulled in at 9:30am and there was literally no one there, so we had the place to ourselves. My daughter was fascinated with all the decorations, haystacks, and pumpkins galore! We spent the first 30 minutes just walking around the property, showing her all the different costumes, scarecrows, and of course, pumpkins. From there we bought tickets for the pony rides and petting zoo (several dollars each) and while she thoroughly enjoyed both, I have to say we used *a lot* of hand sanitizer afterwards. But watching her actually kneel down, stroke a rabbit, then looking up at me with this amazed look on her face, was well worth it.

Casola Farms Corn Then it was on to the hayride, which is a large tractor hooked up to a covered flatbed type of vehicle filled with, what else, hay. The hayride goes all through their property, with lots of fun Halloween decorations along the way. You end at the beginning of a large pumpkin patch, and I was able to take some wonderful videos of Ava running from one pumpkin to the next, pointing, laughing and trying to pick up 20 lb pumpkins. We chose 2, and when we went to pay for them, of course had to buy some Apple Butter, Blueberry preserves and apple cider doughnuts. Sitting down and enjoying the fresh doughnuts with piping hot coffee was a delicious way to end the morning.

                                                                                                                                                                                               Casola Scarecrow

If you decide to go on a weekend, they also have face painting, a corn maze, additional Amish food items, and a Wild West Show. Check their website as there are some coupons you can print for the nighttime hayrides and corn maze. All in all, it was entertaining and a great experience for my daughter. I am sure next year will be even better as she will be 2 ½ and much more aware of what Halloween is all about. I am already looking forward to it!

32nd Annual 2009 Festival of The Sea

   Boats

It’s finally here.  On Saturday, September 19th, from 10am to 7pm, the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce will host it’s 32nd Annual Festival of  the Sea.  This event officially marks the end of summer in the Beach community.  The Festival of the Sea draws more than 60,000 people to the small town for seafood, live entertainment, shopping, and small town fun in a BIG way. This event brings 25 of your favorite restaurants from Jersey Shore to one place and over 200 crafters and artists.  Arnold Avenue becomes a seafood lovers paradise, lined with booths exuding smells of the days’ menu.  Yes, it’s cooked up right there, on the street.  Fresh and ready to be eaten.

This is one event we never miss!  For our family, we get to enjoy the great food we love, without having to worry about getting a sitter or bribing the kids to behave in a restaurant(we don’t do that).  The kids look forward to the festival every year for the games(I can’t count the Goldfish we’ve ended up bringing home over the years!) and booths that line Arnold Avenue and wrap down Bay, full of vendors with great crafts, jewelry, toys and much more.  Definitely give the kids a budget!  I can promise one thing.  No matter what the weatherman says, it’s ALWAYS hot at the Festival of the Sea. Trust me.

    wine taster

New to the Festival this year is the Wine Garden, featuring 10 wineries from our Garden State.  Everything tastes better when it’s ‘home’ made, including the wine.   Just taste for yourself.

There is free shuttle pick-up and drop-off from designated parking areas to ffestival area on Arnold Avenue.  For more information on Shuttle drop-off and pick-up points, visit the Point Pleasant Beach Chamber of Commerce website, or call 1-888-PPBFUN2.  The shuttle is a huge parking time saver.

At the end of the day, if you are really looking to end the day with a bang, Jenkinson’s hosting a firework finale!  How else would we do it at ‘The Beach’?  The only thing missing is the pony. Just kidding.  They have ponies too!  Come out and spend time with the locals and visit the 32nd Annual Festival of the Sea.  It will not disappoint.

Back To School In Brielle

BACK TO SCHOOL IN BRIELLEBrielle

September 9, 2009

Unbelievable as it seems, it’s time… The 3 little words we all know are inevitable that mark the end of summer, but also the beginning of so many new possibilities: Back to School. These final days before the school year begins are spent shopping for supplies and clothes, getting organized for the coming school year, and hopefully spending a little family time soaking up the sun at your local beach or boardwalk.

With a toddler at home, I cannot help but think that time is flying by, and in a few short years I will be one of the parents anxiously awaiting my daughters very first day of school. What a monumental event – one that I am sure will bring tears of joy and of sadness, as my baby is no longer a baby anymore.

I am happy to say that in looking at my daughters’ future place of education, Brielle Elementary School located at 605 Union Lane in Brielle.  I was impressed with the amount of information listed, and to the obvious dedication they have to not only educating their students, but providing a fun, safe and challenging environment for every age group. Brielle Elementary is home for students from Kindergarten through 8th Grade, with a student body of less than 1,000 students.  They offer many sports programs as well as educational opportunities such as soccer, basketball, softball, cheerleading teams, and a program in September called G.I.R.L-Girls Inspiring Real Lives, which I am looking forward to finding out more aboutBrielle School

The Brielle Elementary School Mission Statement:

“We, the members of the Brielle School Community are dedicated to developing the unique abilities of each child; inspiring the achievement of personal excellence.”

On September 1st, Brielle Elementary School hosted a Welcome to the Class of 2018 (um, wow) to get to know all their new Kindergarten children and parents, and show them around their new classroom, discuss expectations, calendar of events, etc The official Back to School for our children in Brielle begins today, Wednesday, September 9th, and it’s a full day - backpacks are filled with folders, notebooks and pencils for the big day!  I hope everyone enjoyed the last few days of summer!

Labor Day 2009 Weekend In Point Pleasant Beach

jenkinson's beach Well, Labor Day weekend is finally here.  The kids go back to school on Tuesday, and I am down to only one son at home during the day.  I know many students already went back to school this week, and the weekend will be a short reminder of the freedom that summer brought to their lives.  I would be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved to have the vacationers go home, and reclaim the quiet calm of Point Pleasant Beach that the off season brings.  But, as with all last ‘hurrahs’,  Labor Day weekend the Jersey Shore will be BIG.

No mattter where you go at the Shore, there is always plenty to do the last weekend of summer, and Point Pleasant Beach is no exception.  The last of the weekly fireworks for the summer are Thursday, after dark at Jenkinson’s Pavilion Beach.  But Thursday night is not the last time to view fireworks on the beach.  Jenkinson’s Pavilion Beach will be having a Labor Day fireworks finale on Monday, September 7th after dark, on Pavilion Beach.  Like all the firework events, admission is FREE.  The free finale evening will begin at 7:30 p.m. with the Festival of The Atlantic concert with Father Alphonse and the Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea, at the Inlet Beach.

   Beach Train

For those of you who are planning to spend the entire weekend at The Beach, Jenkinson’s Amusement Park will have it’s $15 Unlimited Ride Wristbands  on Friday night from 5-11p.m.  Saturday is a great day to hit the water, go shopping, or view the 5th Annual Jenks Pro Body Boarding Competion(weather permitting), sponsored by Jenkinson’s.   For more information on this event visit www.usbatour.com/live.  The competion began on September 1st, and will continue through Monday, September 7th.

Sunday night will be the final Big Joe’s Jersey Talent Show, beginning at 7p.m. on the Pavilion Beach.  The evening will end with the last Movie on the Beach of the summer, ‘Bedtime Stories’, starring Adam Sandler.  Admission to these events are my favorite price, FREE.

Of coarse we have to let you in on the biggest deal of the weekend, just to make sure all the families visiting Point Pleasant Beach are gettingCastaway Cove the most out of their weekend for the best price.  Get into the best attractions for one low price with the Pavilion Package ticket.

Pavilion Package:

Includes admission to Jenkinson’s Aquarium, the very popular Castaway Cove miniature golf, and the Fun House.

This is a huge savings for families.

Have a happy Labor Day weekend, and good luck with back-to-school!  And remember, the Jersey Shore is open all year long!
